Figurative Art
About This Section
The figurative paintings reveal an important truth about artistic mastery: before an artist can successfully break the rules, they must first understand them.
To paint in this expressive style requires years of rigorous academic training. An artist must first master classical drawing, human anatomy, skeletal structure, musculature, proportion, perspective, and measurement. Only after acquiring this foundation can an artist truly improvise, allowing imagination and personal vision to transform reality into art.
The depth of Ruben Manukyan's classical education can be seen in the Graphic Works section, where his academic drawings demonstrate an exceptional command of form, anatomy, and draftsmanship.
In these figurative paintings, however, that technical mastery becomes almost invisible. His powerful and confident hand creates figures that are at once soft, graceful, and alive. They are filled with dreams, hope, sensuality, emotion, and poetic expression. Every brushstroke reflects the strength of an artist whose profound technical knowledge gave him the freedom to express not only the human body but also the human spirit.
Toward the end of his life, after suffering a stroke, Ruben Manukyan could no longer create these powerful artistic statements with the same physical strength and precision. Yet he refused to let his illness silence his creativity.
Instead, he taught himself to paint with his left hand.
In his final works, viewers may notice the natural tremor in his brushstrokes. Rather than diminishing these paintings, those marks make them even more extraordinary. They reveal not weakness, but perseverance. They bear witness to an artist whose creative spirit remained stronger than the limitations of his body.
For me, these are among his most precious works. They are far more than paintings—they are a testament to courage, determination, and an unwavering devotion to art. Every brushstroke tells the story of a man who chose creation over surrender, beauty over despair, and hope over limitation.
His final paintings remind us that true artistic greatness is measured not only by technical mastery, but also by the resilience of the human spirit. They stand as a deeply personal victory over illness and a lasting expression of the extraordinary strength that defined Ruben Manukyan both as an artist and as a human being.
